Great Tips For Being A Great Parent

Every parent wants to be the best that they can for their children.
Parenting is a hard job with very little praise for a job well done.
This article will give you some more tools and information you need to
be a great parent.
Schedule some time for yourself. If you put everything else first, your
children, your work, your spouse, or anything else, you're going to wear
yourself down. Your children will take notice if you're run down and it
can affect them. So take some time once in a while to relax and do
something for yourself.
You need to make sure that you say what you mean and that you do what
you say you are going to do. If you tell your children that you will be
at a play of theirs, you need to make sure that you are there. It is
what builds their trust and respect for their parents.
It is important to remember that when you discipline your children that
you do it in a way that they know you still love them. This is important
because you never want to show anger in your discipline. The goal is not
to cause fear, but to teach a lesson.
Do not feel bad if you cannot volunteer at your child's school because
of work or other obligations and responsibilities. You can still make a
positive impact on your child's educational experience by helping with
his or her homework, reading books together, and staying actively
involved in his or her life.
Parenting your children takes much time and energy. Remember that it is
okay to give yourself a break and recharge your own batteries. By giving
yourself some down time, you will be more fully available and alert when
you are with your children. They are sure to appreciate the difference
in you.
A parenting tip of paramount importance is to teach your child emergency
numbers, and how to use them. You just never know when an emergency may
arise, and your child will be the one saving you, or someone else. Teach
them 911, and also the phone numbers of relatives, and their own home,
so they are able to get help if they desperately need it.
A great way to spend time with your children on a regular basis is to
have a family game night. Pick out a game that everyone will enjoy or
let family members take turns choosing a game. Playing a game together
as a family is a fun alternative to sitting around watching TV or each
one going off and doing their own thing.
Make sure you talk with your children about how to handle anger issues.
It is going to happen, with you and with others. Your children will get
angry and need to know how to handle those emotions. It is your job to
teach them they must be able to cope and learn to deal with anger the
right way.
Even though you have ultimate authority as a parent, you should still
explain things to your child. Simply saying, "Because I said so!" for
every response is a really authoritarian way to rule over a child. Take
your time and explain to the kid why he or she must do as you say. Help
them understand why it is for their best interest, and you can eliminate
some problems.
Encourage your child to be as independent as they can. By teaching a
child to depend on you instead of themselves, they will grow up thinking
it is okay to rely on others for things they can do themselves. This
could prevent them from developing healthy relationships as an adult.
Stand your ground when it comes to your child's bedtime. If it's past
their bedtime and they're begging you for just one more TV show or book,
stand your ground. An hour less sleep per night reduces a child's
ability to function the next day, affecting their concentration at
school. Teenagers need eight to nine hours of sleep per night, whereas
younger school-age children should get a minimum of ten to twelve hours.
As a parent, take the time to give your child or children physical
attention. Your children seek a physical bond with you, and it can be
accomplished by giving each other lots of hugs, kisses, and even by
snuggling with them watching their favorite television program or
reading a book with them.
Make sure you set a good example for your children. If they don't see
you reading books or working on paying bills or balancing a budget, they
won't be inclined to read or do their homework. A child is much more
inclined to follow a positive example than positive advice.
The best way to punish children is take away privileges. This will teach
them that doing something they shouldn't do will cause them to have toys
or maybe even the television taken away from them. Also, do not rule out
putting your child in timeout. The general rule for timeout is one
minute per age your child is.
To instill the value of social graces in your toddler, start early.
Encourage him to wave hello and goodbye and to actually say hello and
goodbye once he is able to speak. Also lead by example and greet your
spouse, family, and friends with a cheerful greeting upon seeing them.
Being a parent of a teen isn't easy, but to make it a little easier, you
probably should get to know who their friends are. Invite them over for
dinner, and get a feel for the type of people they are. It's better to
get to know their friends and make the effort rather than just flat out
refusing them, "just because."
Being a great parent has a lot to do with how much you try, and how you
work at it, as much as it does about getting it right all the time. As
you can see from this article, there are a lot of things you can do to
grow with your kids and show them what being an adult is all about.
